SUMMARY:Experimental Design and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:This unit will provide learners with an introduction to the principles of good experimental design and reporting. The unit aims to develop the scientific skills and understanding of the learner by encouraging them to effectively research\, review\, analyse and debate current scientific theories from the available published literature\, and draw accurate conclusions or action plans to further scientific knowledge or support animal welfare. \nONLINE –September 10th\, 17th\, 23rd and October 1st 2026 12-3pm. \nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 30 \nIAT CPD Credits: 45 \nYou will cover\n\nExperimental design\nCase examples\nEthics\nData sources\nPresentations techniques\nConfirmatory statistical analytical techniques\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\nKnowledge and understanding of the importance of good experimental design on animal welfare\nAbility to compare published experiments against the ARRIVE guidelines\nAbility to design\, manage and report their own experiment\nAbility to evaluate methods used to collect data\nAbility to evaluate the use of techniques to present data\n\n*Further IAT fees may apply

SUMMARY:Advanced anaesthesia for surgical or prolonged procedures
DESCRIPTION:With tutor Prof Paul Flecknell MA\, VetMB\, PhD\, DLAS\, FRCVS\, FIAT (hon)\nThis unit provides information on the use of anaesthetics for surgical procedures. It also includes information on the use of anaesthetics to provide humane restraint during other\, non-painful\, procedures\, such as imaging. After completion of this module\, learners should have an understanding of factors influencing the selection and application of anaesthesia for these procedures. \nOnline only – 14-16th September 2026. Pre-course materials will release two weeks in advance. \nWe highly recommend completion of the level 5 unit Anaesthesia for minor procedures before attending this unit. \n\nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 20\n\nIAT CPD Credits: 45\n\nTutor: Paul Flecknell\nYou will cover\n\n Anaesthesia for both surgical and non-surgical procedures\n Balanced anaesthesia\n Post anaesthetic recovery\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n An understanding of why anaesthesia is required for both surgical and non-surgical procedures\n Ability to describe how different drug classes interact to produce the three components of the anaesthetic triad to different degrees\, and how balanced anaesthesia might be best achieved by using combinations\n Ability to describe methods to optimise post anaesthetic recovery to ensure a smooth and rapid recovery from anaesthesia\n\n*Further IAT fees may apply\n\n\nFor a taste of Prof Flecknell’s teaching\, watch a recent webinar he gave about pain and distress in rodents.
