DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the BNA2025 Programme Organising Committee and the British Neuroscience Association (BNA)\, we are delighted to announce that the 7th International Festival of Neuroscience will be held from 27 to 30 April 2025 at the ACC\, Liverpool\, UK. \n\n\n\nIt is our pleasure to invite you to join us at this unique scientific conference\, which will bring together multiple sectors to share the highest quality science and form lasting connections. \n\n\n\nThe ambition and scope of the BNA Festivals of Neuroscience make them unparalleled across the UK. This novel\, multi-organisation forum brings together all those with an interest in brain research at a single shared event. From fundamental neuroscience in both academic and commercial sectors\, to clinical expertise and patient perspectives in neurology\, psychology and psychiatry – we have it all. In both its scientific programme and its breadth of attendees\, BNA2025 will celebrate the diversity and scientific excellence of our neuroscience community. \n\n\n\nOur focus is to connect\, inform and influence the future of neuroscience. BNA2025 will provide our delegates and partners with more opportunities than ever to engage with like-minded peers\, learn from leading experts in the field and advance their science and careers. \n\n\n\nWe intend to create a lasting legacy with our Festivals – BNA2025 will be no different\, with an extensive programme of public activities and events to immerse Liverpool in Neuroscience and involve the local community and region (see BYOB 2023 ‘Bring Your Own Brain’).  \n\n\n\nIn addition to its strong life sciences focus\, Liverpool\, our host city\, is known all over the world for its hospitality\, musical and maritime history\, culture and diversity.      \n\n\n\nWe are looking forward to welcoming you to this vibrant city\, for what will be the largest neuroscience event of its kind across Europe in 2025.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: PUBLISHING ANIMAL USE STATISTICS
DESCRIPTION:In the lead up to the publication of Great Britain’s 2024 animal research statistics\, this webinar will look at how Concordat on Openness signatories proactively share their animal use data with the public. We will look at how this complex data can be used to explain why\, how and when animals are used in scientific research. This will include looking at how the data is presented\, what data to include\, and how supporting information such as case studies can give additional context. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will primarily focus on giving advice to organisations that carry out animal research who want to explore new ways to present this data. However\, we will also include tips for funders who want advice on how to share data on the proportion of research they fund that involves animals.

SUMMARY:LMB Seminar: One or two membranes?
DESCRIPTION:Investigating the transition between monoderm and diderm cell envelopes across the Tree of Bacteria – In person only.\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Simonetta Gribaldo\, Institut Pasteur \n\n\n\nThe cell envelope is one of the oldest and most fundamental biological structures\, and a major target of antimicrobials. Bacteria can have radically different envelopes\, containing either one (monoderm) or two (diderm) membranes\, generally known as Gram-positives and Gram-negatives. How and why such dramatic transition occurred has remained a major open question in evolutionary biology. In my talk\, I will present recent data where we addressed this issue by merging large-scale computational analyses with experimental evolution using a new bacterial model at the interface between diderms and monoderms. Our results challenge established paradigms and propose a hypothesis on how the monoderm/diderm transition might have occurred. \n\n\n\nMax Perutz Lecture Theatre\, LMB and Webinar.

SUMMARY:Schools' Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:At Schools’ Day\, students from schools all over Cambridgeshire and beyond gather at the Institute to discover more about our world-leading bioscience research. \nLed by Institute researchers and bioscience organisations at the Babraham Research Campus\, secondary and sixth-form students complete hands-on lab projects. \nSchools’ Day is for students in Years 10-13. Typically\, up to 5 students per school or sixth form may attend\, although more places may be offered if capacity allows. \nOften using equipment not available within schools\, Schools’ Day aims to enthuse\, inspire and motivate students and provide insight into what life is really like in the lab. Projects allow students to find out about current scientific research and solving real-world challenges using cutting-edge techniques and equipment. \nSchools’ Day is especially aimed at students from across Cambridgeshire and local areas but has welcomed groups from across the UK and abroad. Over 250 students and teachers attended last spring\, and we hope our 2025 event will see even more young people engaging with bioscience.
