SUMMARY:EARA Webinar: The Role of Veterinarians in Animal Research
DESCRIPTION:Veterinarians play a crucial role in animal research\, yet many people are unaware that animals involved in scientific studies receive veterinary care. Veterinarians ensure that all ethical regulations and animal welfare standards are upheld within an institution\, be it public or private. They are the first to raise concerns when these standards are not met\, and they adhere to the highest standards for a global culture of care. \n\n\n\nThis is the second edition of EARA webinars\, after a very successful first one with over 200 attendees on patient engagement in animal research and direct contact with the researchers working on their conditions. \n\n\n\nNow we turn to a specialised and diverse panel of veterinarians working with animals for scientific purposes.  \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers: \n\n\n\n\nLucie Côté (McGill University Health Centre – Research Institute\, Canada)\n\n\n\nMerel Wegman (Biomedical Primate Research Center\, The Netherlands)\n\n\n\nMichael McKinney (Vanderbilt University\, USA)\n\n\n\nMore speakers to be announced in the upcoming weeks\n\n\n\n\nThe event will end with a panel discussion moderated by Lucie Côté with all participants. \n\n\n\nWe hope this event enlightens diverse audiences about the role of veterinarians in animal research and their mission to ensure animals receive the best possible care while they participate in life-changing studies. \n\n\n\nThis event is online only. Registration is free but mandatory. \n\n\n\nA certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants.

SUMMARY:Fostering collaboration: AWERB and scientists united
DESCRIPTION:Good engagement and communication between scientists and the AWERB are essential to ensure that the AWERB can implement all of its functions effectively\, with benefits for animal welfare\, science\, staff morale and the establishment’s culture of care. However\, some AWERB members may have little contact with scientists other than during project review. Conversely\, scientists may be unfamiliar with the AWERB’s tasks\, apart from project review\, and unsure how the AWERB can benefit them. This webinar\, led by the RSPCA Animals in Science team\, will discuss ways to improve this working relationship and foster mutual understanding through clear communication and engagement.

SUMMARY:Establishment Licence Holders’ Autumn Forum 2025
DESCRIPTION:Theme: The Replacement Debate: Science\, Limitations & Public Trust \n\n\n\nAre you an Establishment Licence Holder (PELh) responsible for overseeing animal research within the UK? Join us for an exclusive workshop\, organised by the LASA PELH Committee\, to explore the critical topic of replacement animal models and their current limitations.  \n\n\n\nWorkshop Overview \n\n\n\nWhile advancements in replacement models continue to progress\, the question remains: How do we encourage updates\, what are their current limitations\, and how do we communicate the message of essential animal research integrated with alternative systems? This workshop will provide an in-depth discussion on the challenges and future directions in replacement methodologies under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986\, as regulated by ASRU.  \n\n\n\nKey Themes \n\n\n\n\nFuture pathways: What is current and next for replacement methodologies? \n\n\n\nIdentifying the limitations of current replacement models \n\n\n\nCommunicating the need for animal models to the public and stakeholders \n\n\n\nInstitutional approaches to replacement \n\n\n\nInsights from key organisations\, such as the NC3Rs and Replacing Animal Research \n\n\n\nGovernment policy updates on the “Roadmap for Replacement” \n\n\n\nThe latest public opinion on animal research  \n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed not as a showcase of replacement models but as a critical discussion on their use\, current limitations\, future directions\, and the continued necessity for whole-animal models in specific research areas.  \n\n\n\nAt the end of the event there will be an informal networking session with other PELhs over drinks. \n\n\n\nThe full scientific programme will be published soon.

SUMMARY:Mouse Embryo and Spermatozoa Cryopreservation Course
DESCRIPTION:Cost is inclusive of accommodation\nCryopreservation allows long-term storage of embryos and sperm\, providing a convenient way to preserve\, protect and transport mouse lines for use in research. Archiving scientifically relevant mouse lines also adheres to good animal welfare practices by removing the need for continued animal breeding and is integral to any comprehensive colony management programme.\n\nRunning bi-annually since 2004\, this course provides practical experience in murine embryo and spermatozoa freezing techniques routinely used at MRC Harwell and a simple\, robust in vitro fertilisation procedure. The course will also cover the basic laboratory skills required when working in an assisted reproductive biology environment such as pipetting\, weighing\, microscope use\, and embryo handling.\nWho is this for? \n\n Researchers\n Senior animal technicians\n PhD students\n\nFollowing this course\, you will have:\n\n Practical experience of sperm harvesting and freezing/thawing\n A clear understanding to set up and in vitro fertilisation session using both frozen and freshly harvested sperm\n Practical experience of oocyte and embryo harvesting for in vitro fertilisation and embryo freezing\, respectively\n Practical experience of embryo cryopreservation/thawing using a simple vitrification method\n An understanding of surgical embryo transfer\, including some practical experience of pre-operative aseptic techniques and sub-cuticular suturing\n Practical experience of non-surgical embryo transfer techniques\n An understanding of the current methods used for handling and shipping samples and managing a cryo-archive\, as well as an overview of blastocyst genotyping

SUMMARY:Experimental Design for In Vivo Research | CLAST
DESCRIPTION:This unit provides a relevant level of understanding of the national and international legal and regulatory framework within which projects are constructed and managed\, and of their legal responsibilities. The learner must be able to identify\, understand and respond appropriately to the ethical and welfare issues raised by the use of animals in scientific procedures generally\, and specifically within their own programme of work. The learner should be able to develop\, direct and control a programme of work in order to achieve its stated objectives\, while ensuring compliance with the terms and conditions of any regulation governing the project.\n\nFace to Face learning – 13th-16th October 2025 at Advance. \nCourse Details\nCourse length: 200 hours\n\nCredits: 20\n\nTeacher: Roger Cox & Matt Leach\nYou will cover\n\n Legislation and good practice\n Project applications\n Experimental Design\n Statistical techniques\n Ethics\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n Ability to describe in detail the main components of the national legislation regulating the scientific use of animals\n Ability to describe the principles of a good scientific strategy that are necessary to achieve robust results\n Ability to justify on both scientific and ethical grounds\, the decision to use living animals\n Ability to implement the Three Rs\n\n \n\n*Further IAT fees may apply
