SUMMARY:Pain and distress in laboratory animals
DESCRIPTION:Understanding\, preventing and alleviating pain and distress is a key part of the responsibilities of many animal care staff. This may involve directly evaluating the welfare state of animals and implementing refinements to their care or participating in the ethical review process and contributing to the harm: benefit analysis of research projects. \nThis unit provides an overview of pain and distress in laboratory animals\, gives an introduction to pain and nociception\, and current concepts of animal welfare. It provides detailed information on evaluating and managing pain in rodents\, and an overview of pain in larger species and in non-mammalian species. The evaluation of severity of research procedures is discussed\, together with the issues surrounding cumulative severity and retrospective assessment of procedures. \nOnline only – Zoom 12-15th Jan 2026. SUMMARY:EARA Webinar: The Role of Veterinarians in Animal Research
DESCRIPTION:Veterinarians play a crucial role in animal research\, yet many people are unaware that animals involved in scientific studies receive veterinary care. Veterinarians ensure that all ethical regulations and animal welfare standards are upheld within an institution\, be it public or private. They are the first to raise concerns when these standards are not met\, and they adhere to the highest standards for a global culture of care. \n\n\n\nThis is the second edition of EARA webinars\, after a very successful first one with over 200 attendees on patient engagement in animal research and direct contact with the researchers working on their conditions. \n\n\n\nNow we turn to a specialised and diverse panel of veterinarians working with animals for scientific purposes.  \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers: \n\n\n\n\nLucie Côté (McGill University Health Centre – Research Institute\, Canada)\n\n\n\nMerel Wegman (Biomedical Primate Research Center\, The Netherlands)\n\n\n\nMichael McKinney (Vanderbilt University\, USA)\n\n\n\nMore speakers to be announced in the upcoming weeks\n\n\n\n\nThe event will end with a panel discussion moderated by Lucie Côté with all participants. \n\n\n\nWe hope this event enlightens diverse audiences about the role of veterinarians in animal research and their mission to ensure animals receive the best possible care while they participate in life-changing studies. \n\n\n\nThis event is online only. Registration is free but mandatory. \n\n\n\nA certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants.

SUMMARY:NC3Rs/Innovate UK workshop: Delivering the Government’s alternative methods strategy – Pharmacokinetic and cardiovascular safety studies
DESCRIPTION:Advances in in vitro and in silico approaches are reshaping drug development by improving the prediction of efficacy\, safety and pharmacokinetics. This workshop will focus on two priority targets identified in the UK Government’s 2025 alternative methods strategy: reducing reliance on animal studies in pharmacokinetic and cardiovascular safety studies. \n\n\n\nSessions will bring together scientists and stakeholders to discuss the current landscape and identify gaps and opportunities where replacement technologies could improve study outcomes\, increase human relevance and minimise animal use. The outputs will help to define how the Government targets can be delivered in practice through supporting research collaboration and innovation. \n\n\n\nRegistration closes: Friday 27 February.

SUMMARY:LIVE Responsible Research Webinar - Improving the Reproducibility of Cell Line Research
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Steve Smith and Dr Nikki Osborne for this LIVE responsible research webinar about “Improving the Reproducibility of Cell Line Research”\n\nDuring this session Steve (Senior Product Manager\, IDEXX BioAnalytics) will explore the often overlooked threats to cell health and reproducibility caused by contamination\, misidentification\, and genetic drift compromising data integrity\, delaying publications\, and derailing downstream programs. He will share how leading labs are building proactive quality strategies to protect their research before answering any questions that the audience may have.\n\nAttend this webinar to learn how to:\n– identify the most common—and most overlooked—sources of contamination in cell culture\n– understand the true prevalence of cell line misidentification and genetic instability\n– recognize how these risks impact reproducibility\, publications\, and downstream decision-making\n– implement practical\, time-based testing strategies to safeguard your work\n– build a proactive cell health strategy—not just reactive testing\n– find useful resources and further information.
