SUMMARY:AFSTAL 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 50th AFSTAL Conference \n\n\n\nDear colleagues\, dear members\, \n\n\n\nAs every year\, Laboratory Animal Science brings us together around scientific\, regulatory\, ethical\, and technical themes. For this 50th edition\, we have chosen to explore in greater depth an essential and everyday concern in our institutions: the culture of care. \n\n\n\nOn behalf of AFSTAL\, I am therefore pleased to invite you to the 50th Conference of our Association\, which will take place from June 10 to 12\, 2026\, in Reims.

SUMMARY:UFAW Centenary Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:100 years of Science for Animal Welfare \n\n\n\nAs UFAW celebrates its centenary in 2026\, we invite you to join us as we return to our roots at the University of London for our 3-day event exploring the latest animal welfare science and reflecting on the state of animal welfare as a scientific discipline.  \n\n\n\nAs well as the very latest developments in animal welfare science\, this year’s conference will feature 3 symposia which critically evaluate animal welfare science in 2026 and look to its future:  \n\n\n\nAnimal Welfare Science: Past\, Present\, and Future  \n\n\n\nFrom the very start\, UFAW has championed the use of science to improve animal welfare. Indeed\, there is a strong argument that UFAW and its founder\, Major Charles Hume\, invented the very term “animal welfare science”. UFAW certainly played a pivotal role in establishing animal welfare as a scientific discipline. In this symposium\, historians and animal welfare scientists will look back at the genesis of animal welfare science\, its status as a fully-fledged academic discipline\, and where animal welfare science may go in the future. \n\n\n\nAssessing Animal Welfare  \n\n\n\nFollowing publication of the latest book in the UFAW Animal Welfare series\, Assessing Animal Welfare – a guide to the valid use of indicators of affective states (edited by Georgia Mason\, Birte Nielsen and Mike Mendl)\, this symposium will explore the latest thinking on how we can move closer to the holy grail of animal welfare science\, reliably assessing the affective state of animals by using and measuring valid indicators.  \n\n\n\nHow can we make animaI welfare research more replicable?  \n\n\n\nThe impact of any science is only as robust as the quality of evidence produced. For a science like animal welfare\, this is a critical issue as policy and practice must be built on reliable evidence to allow real-world improvement in animal welfare. This symposium will examine the problems associated with poor replicability of research results\, specifically focusing on animal welfare science\, and what measures can be taken to improve the situation. The presentations and interactive discussion will be relevant for researchers – those just starting their careers\, and more experienced scientists\, who serve as supervisors and reviewers of funding applications and scientific manuscripts – as well as for policy makers and other users of animal welfare knowledge.   \n\n\n\nThere will be a drinks reception for all those attending in person on the evening of the 23 June\, and a gala networking event on 24 June offering opportunities for networking and socialising.

SUMMARY:Using Conditional Transgenic Models
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for anyone working with conditional mouse models\, including the Cre-Lox system and alternative recombinase platforms such as Flp\, Dre\, and Vika. These technologies provide researchers with the ability to manipulate gene expression in a spatially and/or temporally controlled manner\, enabling precise investigation of biological processes that cannot be interrogated using traditional constitutive knockout models.\n\nBy allowing genes to be selectively turned on or off in specific tissues\, cell types\, or developmental stages\, conditional systems offer powerful means to dissect the roles of individual genes within complex physiological networks. Moreover\, combining multiple recombinase systems expands the experimental possibilities even further – for example\, enabling the controlled exchange of a wild type exon for a mutant variant at a defined point in time to model disease progression with exceptional precision.\n\nHowever\, the intricate mechanisms underlying conditional systems make them particularly vulnerable to errors and misinterpretation.\n\nWhile the biology behind these approaches is elegant\, in practice there are numerous pitfalls that can compromise experimental outcomes. Many of these issues are not immediately apparent from the literature on conditional models\, nor are they always obvious within an experiment unless you know what to look for. Consequently\, researchers may unknowingly draw inaccurate conclusions\, with errors that can propagate and compromise downstream studies.\n\nThis course aims to equip trainees with a clear understanding of how these models function biologically\, as well as the practical ways in which they can fail. We will cover how to anticipate and control for confounding effects\, how to troubleshoot unexpected results\, and how to proceed when a model does not behave as expected.\n\nWho is this for?\n\nAnyone who is using or planning to use conditional models\, that has previous knowledge of advanced mouse genetics\, including researchers\, PhD students and colony managers.\n\nAfter this course\, you will be able to:\n\n Understand the basic principles of conditional transgenesis\n Understand how cre expressing and floxed alleles are produced and the potential impact on the experimental outcome\n Identify the advantages and challenges of these systems\n Analyse recombinase (Cre) expression\n Understand how to establish colonies for conditional transgenesis and the importance of background strain within this\n Plan breeding schemes with consideration of control strategies and cohort numbers

SUMMARY:Mouse Embryo and Spermatozoa Cryopreservation
DESCRIPTION:Cost is inclusive of accommodation\n\nCryopreservation allows long-term storage of embryos and sperm\, providing a convenient way to preserve\, protect and transport mouse lines for use in research. Archiving scientifically relevant mouse lines also adheres to good animal welfare practices by removing the need for continued animal breeding and is integral to any comprehensive colony management programme.\n\nRunning bi-annually since 2004\, this course provides practical experience in murine embryo and spermatozoa freezing techniques routinely used at MRC Harwell and a simple\, robust in vitro fertilisation procedure. The course will also cover the basic laboratory skills required when working in an assisted reproductive biology environment such as pipetting\, weighing\, microscope use\, and embryo handling.\n\nWho is this for? \n\n Researchers\n Senior animal technicians\n PhD students\n\nFollowing this course\, you will have:\n\n Practical experience of sperm harvesting and freezing/thawing\n A clear understanding to set up and in vitro fertilisation session using both frozen and freshly harvested sperm\n Practical experience of oocyte and embryo harvesting for in vitro fertilisation and embryo freezing\, respectively\n Practical experience of embryo cryopreservation/thawing using a simple vitrification method\n An understanding of surgical embryo transfer\, including some practical experience of pre-operative aseptic techniques and sub-cuticular suturing\n Practical experience of non-surgical embryo transfer techniques\n An understanding of the current methods used for handling and shipping samples and managing a cryo-archive\, as well as an overview of blastocyst genotyping

SUMMARY:Mouse Necropsy and Tissue Processing
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day course provides practical training in how to perform a basic standard mouse necropsy and describe gross observations made during the process. It then covers considerations for the treatment of tissues collected at necropsy\, some of the routinely used solutions and the cutting in of tissues in preparation for histological processing and embedding. \nFollowing the course\, you will be able to: \n\n\n Perform a basic standard mouse necropsy\n Describe gross observations at necropsy\n Gain an understanding of the rapid ‘emergency’ opening\n Select suitable tissues for histology and further analysis\n Perform a standard cut-in\n\nWho is this for: \n\n\n Researchers\n Animal Technicians\n PhD Students\n\n\n\nThis training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant\, high quality training. Upon completion of this course\, attendees can claim 48 CPD points.
