SUMMARY:Mouse Embryo and Spermatozoa Cryopreservation Course
DESCRIPTION:Cost is inclusive of accommodation\nCryopreservation allows long-term storage of embryos and sperm\, providing a convenient way to preserve\, protect and transport mouse lines for use in research. Archiving scientifically relevant mouse lines also adheres to good animal welfare practices by removing the need for continued animal breeding and is integral to any comprehensive colony management programme.\n\nRunning bi-annually since 2004\, this course provides practical experience in murine embryo and spermatozoa freezing techniques routinely used at MRC Harwell and a simple\, robust in vitro fertilisation procedure. The course will also cover the basic laboratory skills required when working in an assisted reproductive biology environment such as pipetting\, weighing\, microscope use\, and embryo handling.\nWho is this for? \n\n Researchers\n Senior animal technicians\n PhD students\n\nFollowing this course\, you will have:\n\n Practical experience of sperm harvesting and freezing/thawing\n A clear understanding to set up and in vitro fertilisation session using both frozen and freshly harvested sperm\n Practical experience of oocyte and embryo harvesting for in vitro fertilisation and embryo freezing\, respectively\n Practical experience of embryo cryopreservation/thawing using a simple vitrification method\n An understanding of surgical embryo transfer\, including some practical experience of pre-operative aseptic techniques and sub-cuticular suturing\n Practical experience of non-surgical embryo transfer techniques\n An understanding of the current methods used for handling and shipping samples and managing a cryo-archive\, as well as an overview of blastocyst genotyping

SUMMARY:Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshop 2: Managing Post-Operative Pain and Distress in Rodents and Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Recognising\, preventing and alleviating pain and distress in laboratory animals is a key responsibility of all those involved in their care and use. This workshop is one of two linked workshops and is focussed on assessing and alleviating post-operative pain and distress in laboratory rodents and rabbits.\n\nThis workshop (Workshop 2) will take place in June 2025\, and features pre-recorded and live webinars\, along with e-learning modules. The live sessions aim to provide practical tuition in pain scoring\, and application of pain and distress alleviation strategies to a range of different surgical procedures. Revised and updated content will include new recommendations on use of local anaesthetics in rodents\, and discuss the problems of dose selection of NSAIDs in mice.

SUMMARY:Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshop 1: Foundations of Pain and Distress Management in Rodents and Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Our regular workshops on prevention and alleviation of pain and distress have dealt primarily with post-surgical pain. Although we’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback\, we have had frequent requests to include more information on other sources of pain and distress. Matt Leach\, Jon Gledhill and I have been working to achieve this\, and have redeveloped and updated our workshops for 2025. We will now present two\, linked workshops on pain and distress and the first of these will run in May this year (21-22nd for the zoom sessions). We will retain the successful on-line format of a mix of e-learning\, pre-recorded webinars and live\, problem based sessions using zoom and mentimeter. This first workshop focusses on optimising the welfare of laboratory rodents and rabbits and will discuss both procedure-related and other sources of pain and distress. It will provide an overview of animal welfare and the nature of stress and distress\, together with the practical application of this knowledge to optimise animal welfare.

SUMMARY:LMB Seminar: One or two membranes?
DESCRIPTION:Investigating the transition between monoderm and diderm cell envelopes across the Tree of Bacteria – In person only.\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Simonetta Gribaldo\, Institut Pasteur \n\n\n\nThe cell envelope is one of the oldest and most fundamental biological structures\, and a major target of antimicrobials. Bacteria can have radically different envelopes\, containing either one (monoderm) or two (diderm) membranes\, generally known as Gram-positives and Gram-negatives. How and why such dramatic transition occurred has remained a major open question in evolutionary biology. In my talk\, I will present recent data where we addressed this issue by merging large-scale computational analyses with experimental evolution using a new bacterial model at the interface between diderms and monoderms. Our results challenge established paradigms and propose a hypothesis on how the monoderm/diderm transition might have occurred. \n\n\n\nMax Perutz Lecture Theatre\, LMB and Webinar.

SUMMARY:CLAST - Principles of surgery
DESCRIPTION:This unit covers principles of pre-operative animal assessment and care\, preparations for surgery including equipment preparation and aseptic technique and the principles of successful surgery. The unit provides information about possible complications\, post-operative care and monitoring along with details of the healing process. It also covers more practical elements\, for example\, the demonstration of commonly used instruments and provides an opportunity for trainees to practice some of the practical aspects of surgical technique\, such as methods of suturing\, using appropriate non-animal models. \n\n\n\nOnline only – 10th and 11th of March 2025. \n\n\n\nWe highly recommend completion of the level 5 units Anaesthesia for minor procedures\, and Advanced anaesthesia for surgical or prolonged procedures before attending this unit.  \n\n\n\nYou will cover\n\n\n\n\nAnatomy and physiology\n\n\n\nLegislation\n\n\n\nSurgical procedures\n\n\n\nRefinement\n\n\n\nTissue healing\n\n\n\nProblems\n\n\n\nRecord keeping\n\n\n\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n\n\nAbility to demonstrate competence in surgical techniques\, including ablations and incisions and their closure by methods appropriate to the tissue concerned \n\n\n\nAbility to describe the planning of surgical procedures and discuss the competencies required of all personnel involved \n\n\n\nKnowledge and understanding of possible causes of delayed or impaired wound healing or other post-surgical complications and describe ways in which these can be avoided or\, if they occur\, treated

SUMMARY:Schools' Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:At Schools’ Day\, students from schools all over Cambridgeshire and beyond gather at the Institute to discover more about our world-leading bioscience research. \nLed by Institute researchers and bioscience organisations at the Babraham Research Campus\, secondary and sixth-form students complete hands-on lab projects. \nSchools’ Day is for students in Years 10-13. Typically\, up to 5 students per school or sixth form may attend\, although more places may be offered if capacity allows. \nOften using equipment not available within schools\, Schools’ Day aims to enthuse\, inspire and motivate students and provide insight into what life is really like in the lab. Projects allow students to find out about current scientific research and solving real-world challenges using cutting-edge techniques and equipment. \nSchools’ Day is especially aimed at students from across Cambridgeshire and local areas but has welcomed groups from across the UK and abroad. Over 250 students and teachers attended last spring\, and we hope our 2025 event will see even more young people engaging with bioscience.
