SUMMARY:Using Conditional Transgenic Models
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for anyone working with conditional mouse models\, including the Cre-Lox system and alternative recombinase platforms such as Flp\, Dre\, and Vika. These technologies provide researchers with the ability to manipulate gene expression in a spatially and/or temporally controlled manner\, enabling precise investigation of biological processes that cannot be interrogated using traditional constitutive knockout models.\n\nBy allowing genes to be selectively turned on or off in specific tissues\, cell types\, or developmental stages\, conditional systems offer powerful means to dissect the roles of individual genes within complex physiological networks. Moreover\, combining multiple recombinase systems expands the experimental possibilities even further – for example\, enabling the controlled exchange of a wild type exon for a mutant variant at a defined point in time to model disease progression with exceptional precision.\n\nHowever\, the intricate mechanisms underlying conditional systems make them particularly vulnerable to errors and misinterpretation.\n\nWhile the biology behind these approaches is elegant\, in practice there are numerous pitfalls that can compromise experimental outcomes. Many of these issues are not immediately apparent from the literature on conditional models\, nor are they always obvious within an experiment unless you know what to look for. Consequently\, researchers may unknowingly draw inaccurate conclusions\, with errors that can propagate and compromise downstream studies.\n\nThis course aims to equip trainees with a clear understanding of how these models function biologically\, as well as the practical ways in which they can fail. We will cover how to anticipate and control for confounding effects\, how to troubleshoot unexpected results\, and how to proceed when a model does not behave as expected.\n\nWho is this for?\n\nAnyone who is using or planning to use conditional models\, that has previous knowledge of advanced mouse genetics\, including researchers\, PhD students and colony managers.\n\nAfter this course\, you will be able to:\n\n Understand the basic principles of conditional transgenesis\n Understand how cre expressing and floxed alleles are produced and the potential impact on the experimental outcome\n Identify the advantages and challenges of these systems\n Analyse recombinase (Cre) expression\n Understand how to establish colonies for conditional transgenesis and the importance of background strain within this\n Plan breeding schemes with consideration of control strategies and cohort numbers

SUMMARY:Laboratory Skills for Animal Technicians
DESCRIPTION:Having the knowledge and confidence to work safely in the laboratory is a valuable skill for all animal technicians. This course will cover basic theoretical and practical laboratory skills including following COSHH risk assessments\, best laboratory practice\, use of fume hoods/biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other laboratory equipment\, pipetting skills\, using balances and preparing reagents and solutions. \nA sustainability module is also included to highlight ways to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory work. Participants will explore practical ways to improve sustainability in the laboratory by reducing energy consumption and minimising the use of plastics and water and promoting more sustainable supply chain practices. \nWho is this for? \n\n\n Animal Technicians who would like to develop their laboratory skills\n\nAfter the course you will be able to: \n\n\n Read and understand the purpose of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessment (RA) forms\n Process blood samples for further analysis\n Correctly use fume hoods\, biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other general laboratory equipment\n Choose the correct pipette for your task and perform common pipetting techniques\n Set up and use balances to accurately weigh both substances and animals.\n Calculate doses of substances and prepare them accurately.\n Adjust the pH of solutions\n Incorporate sustainability considerations into laboratory work to support efficient and environmentally responsible research

SUMMARY:Minimally invasive procedures without anaesthesia
DESCRIPTION:With tutors Romuald Binet PhD & Ilaria Cervellini PhD\nThis unit provides an introduction to the theory relating to minor procedures.  It provides information about appropriate methods of handling and restraint and describes appropriate techniques for injection\, dosing and sampling relevant to the species.  It should provide information sufficient for individuals to understand what will be required of them before they go on to be trained in the practical aspects of these skills whilst under supervision. \n15th and 16th October 2026 at the Advance Training Centre. \n\nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 20\n\nIAT CPD Credits: 30\n\nTutors: Romuald Binet\, Hannah Davis\, & Ilaria Cervellini\nYou will cover\n\n Anatomy and physiology\n Behavioural monitoring\n Administration and withdrawal routes\n Refinement\n Evidence-based research (or lack of it) relating to administration of substances\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n Knowledge and understanding of the impact of animal handling and restraint on animal welfare\n Knowledge and understanding of techniques/procedures including\, for example\, injection\, sampling and dosing techniques (routes/volumes/frequency)\, dietary modification\, gavage\, tissue biopsy\, behavioural tests\, use of metabolic cages\n Knowledge and understanding of the need for rigour and consistency in conducting scientific procedures and the correct recording and handling of samples\n Knowledge and understanding of methods for minimising the impact on the animals subject to scientific procedures\n\n*Further IAT fees may apply

SUMMARY:Mouse Necropsy and Tissue Processing
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day course provides practical training in how to perform a basic standard mouse necropsy and describe gross observations made during the process. It then covers considerations for the treatment of tissues collected at necropsy\, some of the routinely used solutions and the cutting in of tissues in preparation for histological processing and embedding. \nFollowing the course\, you will be able to: \n\n\n Perform a basic standard mouse necropsy\n Describe gross observations at necropsy\n Gain an understanding of the rapid ‘emergency’ opening\n Select suitable tissues for histology and further analysis\n Perform a standard cut-in\n\nWho is this for: \n\n\n Researchers\n Animal Technicians\n PhD Students\n\n\n\nThis training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant\, high quality training. Upon completion of this course\, attendees can claim 48 CPD points.
