SUMMARY:Mouse Embryo and Spermatozoa Cryopreservation Course
DESCRIPTION:Cost is inclusive of accommodation\nCryopreservation allows long-term storage of embryos and sperm\, providing a convenient way to preserve\, protect and transport mouse lines for use in research. Archiving scientifically relevant mouse lines also adheres to good animal welfare practices by removing the need for continued animal breeding and is integral to any comprehensive colony management programme.\n\nRunning bi-annually since 2004\, this course provides practical experience in murine embryo and spermatozoa freezing techniques routinely used at MRC Harwell and a simple\, robust in vitro fertilisation procedure. The course will also cover the basic laboratory skills required when working in an assisted reproductive biology environment such as pipetting\, weighing\, microscope use\, and embryo handling.\nWho is this for? \n\n Researchers\n Senior animal technicians\n PhD students\n\nFollowing this course\, you will have:\n\n Practical experience of sperm harvesting and freezing/thawing\n A clear understanding to set up and in vitro fertilisation session using both frozen and freshly harvested sperm\n Practical experience of oocyte and embryo harvesting for in vitro fertilisation and embryo freezing\, respectively\n Practical experience of embryo cryopreservation/thawing using a simple vitrification method\n An understanding of surgical embryo transfer\, including some practical experience of pre-operative aseptic techniques and sub-cuticular suturing\n Practical experience of non-surgical embryo transfer techniques\n An understanding of the current methods used for handling and shipping samples and managing a cryo-archive\, as well as an overview of blastocyst genotyping

SUMMARY:Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshop 2: Managing Post-Operative Pain and Distress in Rodents and Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Recognising\, preventing and alleviating pain and distress in laboratory animals is a key responsibility of all those involved in their care and use. This workshop is one of two linked workshops and is focussed on assessing and alleviating post-operative pain and distress in laboratory rodents and rabbits.\n\nThis workshop (Workshop 2) will take place in June 2025\, and features pre-recorded and live webinars\, along with e-learning modules. The live sessions aim to provide practical tuition in pain scoring\, and application of pain and distress alleviation strategies to a range of different surgical procedures. Revised and updated content will include new recommendations on use of local anaesthetics in rodents\, and discuss the problems of dose selection of NSAIDs in mice.

SUMMARY:Laboratory Animal Welfare Workshop 1: Foundations of Pain and Distress Management in Rodents and Rabbits
DESCRIPTION:Our regular workshops on prevention and alleviation of pain and distress have dealt primarily with post-surgical pain. Although we’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback\, we have had frequent requests to include more information on other sources of pain and distress. Matt Leach\, Jon Gledhill and I have been working to achieve this\, and have redeveloped and updated our workshops for 2025. We will now present two\, linked workshops on pain and distress and the first of these will run in May this year (21-22nd for the zoom sessions). We will retain the successful on-line format of a mix of e-learning\, pre-recorded webinars and live\, problem based sessions using zoom and mentimeter. This first workshop focusses on optimising the welfare of laboratory rodents and rabbits and will discuss both procedure-related and other sources of pain and distress. It will provide an overview of animal welfare and the nature of stress and distress\, together with the practical application of this knowledge to optimise animal welfare.

SUMMARY:Recognition of pain\, suffering and distress
DESCRIPTION:This unit prepares individuals to be able to identify normal condition and behaviour of experimental animals and enable them to differentiate between a normal animal and one which is showing signs of pain\, suffering or distress which could be a result of factors including environment\, husbandry or the effect of experimental protocols. It will also provide information regarding severity classifications\, cumulative severity and the use of humane endpoints. \nOnline only – 20th to 22nd May 2025. \nWe highly recommend completion of the level 4 unit Physiology of pain and distress in laboratory animals before attending this unit. \nCourse Details\nCourse length: 200 hours \nCredits: 20 \nTeacher: Paul Flecknell / Matt Leach \nYou will cover\n\nAssessment of the animal\nHumane end points\nRefinement\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\nmethods for assessing and recording the welfare of the animals in your care\nKnowledge and understanding of humane end points and their use\nAbility to describe the use of anaesthesia or analgesia to reduce animal pain\, suffering\, distress or lasting harm
