SUMMARY:Principles of surgery
DESCRIPTION:With tutors Prof Paul Flecknell MA\, VetMB\, PhD\, DLAS\, FRCVS\, FIAT (hon) and Dr Lucy Whitfield MA VetMB DLAS PGCert(VetEd) FHEA MRCVS\nThis unit covers principles of pre-operative animal assessment and care\, preparations for surgery including equipment preparation and aseptic technique and the principles of successful surgery. The unit provides information about possible complications\, post-operative care and monitoring along with details of the healing process. It also covers more practical elements\, for example\, the demonstration of commonly used instruments and provides an opportunity for trainees to practice some of the practical aspects of surgical technique\, such as methods of suturing\, using appropriate non-animal models. \nOnline only – 12th and 13th Nov 2026. All pre-course material will be available two weeks in advance. \nWe highly recommend completion of the level 5 units Anaesthesia for minor procedures\, and Advanced anaesthesia for surgical or prolonged procedures before attending this unit. \n\nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 20\n\nIAT CPD Credits: 30\n\nTutors: Paul Flecknell & Lucy Whitfield\nYou will cover\n\n Anatomy and physiology\n Legislation\n Surgical procedures\n Refinement\n Tissue healing\n Problems\n Record keeping\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n Ability to describe the planning of surgical procedures and discuss the competencies required of all personnel involved\n Knowledge and understanding of possible causes of delayed or impaired wound healing or other post-surgical complications and describe ways in which these can be avoided or\, if they occur\, treated\n Ability to demonstrate competence in surgical techniques\, including ablations and incisions and their closure by methods appropriate to the tissue concerned\n\n*Further IAT fees may apply

SUMMARY:Practical Laboratory Skills
DESCRIPTION:Having the knowledge and confidence to work safely in the laboratory is an essential skill for all staff working in laboratories. This course will cover basic theoretical and practical laboratory skills including preparing COSHH risk assessments\, good laboratory practice\, use of fume hoods/biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other laboratory equipment\, pipetting skills\, using balances and preparing reagents and solutions.\n\nA sustainability module is also included to highlight ways to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory work. Participants will explore practical ways to improve sustainability in the laboratory by reducing energy consumption and minimising the use of plastics and water and promoting more sustainable supply chain practices.\n\nWho is this for?\n\n Research Staff\n Technical Staff and students new to the laboratory environment\n Experienced personnel looking to refresh their skills\n\nAfter the course you will be able to:\n\n Prepare and understand the purpose of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessment (RA) forms\n Understand the importance of good laboratory practice\, including choosing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining accurate laboratory records\n Correctly use fume hoods\, biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other general laboratory equipment\n Choose the correct pipette for your task and perform common techniques\n Set up and use balances correctly\n Prepare reagents and solutions\n Adjust the pH of solutions\n Incorporate sustainability considerations into laboratory work to support efficient and environmentally responsible research\n\n\n\n\nThis training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant\, high quality training. Upon completion of this course\, attendees can claim 21 CPD points.
