SUMMARY:Practical Laboratory Skills
DESCRIPTION:Having the knowledge and confidence to work safely in the laboratory is an essential skill for all staff working in laboratories. This course will cover basic theoretical and practical laboratory skills including preparing COSHH risk assessments\, good laboratory practice\, use of fume hoods/biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other laboratory equipment\, pipetting skills\, using balances and preparing reagents and solutions.\n\nA sustainability module is also included to highlight ways to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory work. Participants will explore practical ways to improve sustainability in the laboratory by reducing energy consumption and minimising the use of plastics and water and promoting more sustainable supply chain practices.\n\nWho is this for?\n\n Research Staff\n Technical Staff and students new to the laboratory environment\n Experienced personnel looking to refresh their skills\n\nAfter the course you will be able to:\n\n Prepare and understand the purpose of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessment (RA) forms\n Understand the importance of good laboratory practice\, including choosing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining accurate laboratory records\n Correctly use fume hoods\, biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other general laboratory equipment\n Choose the correct pipette for your task and perform common techniques\n Set up and use balances correctly\n Prepare reagents and solutions\n Adjust the pH of solutions\n Incorporate sustainability considerations into laboratory work to support efficient and environmentally responsible research\n\n\n\n\nThis training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant\, high quality training. Upon completion of this course\, attendees can claim 21 CPD points.

SUMMARY:Experimental Design for in vivo Research
DESCRIPTION:With tutors Roger D. Cox PhD & Matt Leach PhD\nThis is a mandatory course for IAT Fellowship eligibility. \nThis unit provides a relevant level of understanding of the national and international legal and regulatory framework within which projects are constructed and managed\, and of their legal responsibilities. The learner must be able to identify\, understand and respond appropriately to the ethical and welfare issues raised by the use of animals in scientific procedures generally\, and specifically within their own programme of work. The learner should be able to develop\, direct and control a programme of work in order to achieve its stated objectives\, while ensuring compliance with the terms and conditions of any regulation governing the project. \nFace to Face learning -25-28th Jan 2027 \nThis course does not have some pre-course material which is sent a week before hand. \n\nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 20\n\nIAT CPD Credits: 60\n\nTutor: Roger Cox & Matt Leach\nAimed at\nThis course is designed for experienced professionals who play a significant role in the planning\, reporting\, or review of animal experiments. It is particularly suited to individuals with responsibility within programmes of work and ensuring studies are scientifically robust and reproducible and Senior technologists involved in planning\, reporting\, and driving refinements in animal care and husbandry\, who want to ensure their contributions are backed by reliable data and sound experimental design. \n\nYou will cover\n\n Legislation and good practice\n Project applications\n Experimental Design\n Statistical techniques\n Ethics\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\n Ability to describe in detail the main components of the national legislation regulating the scientific use of animals\n Ability to describe the principles of a good scientific strategy that are necessary to achieve robust results\n Ability to justify on both scientific and ethical grounds\, the decision to use living animals\n Ability to implement the Three Rs\n\n*Further IAT fees may apply
