SUMMARY:Pain and distress in laboratory animals
DESCRIPTION:Understanding\, preventing and alleviating pain and distress is a key part of the responsibilities of many animal care staff. This may involve directly evaluating the welfare state of animals and implementing refinements to their care or participating in the ethical review process and contributing to the harm: benefit analysis of research projects. \nThis unit provides an overview of pain and distress in laboratory animals\, gives an introduction to pain and nociception\, and current concepts of animal welfare. It provides detailed information on evaluating and managing pain in rodents\, and an overview of pain in larger species and in non-mammalian species. The evaluation of severity of research procedures is discussed\, together with the issues surrounding cumulative severity and retrospective assessment of procedures. \nOnline only – Zoom 12-15th Jan 2026. Pre-course material will be available two weeks before the course starts.  \nWe highly recommend completion of the level 4 unit Physiology of pain and distress in laboratory animals\, and the level 5 unit Recognition of pain\, suffering and distress\, before attending this unit. \nCourse Details\nDiploma Credits: 30 \nIAT CPD Credits: 60 \nTutors: Paul Flecknell / Matt Leach \nYou will cover\n\nCurrent concepts:  pain\, distress and animal welfare\nNormal behavior\nMethods for assessing and recording the welfare of animals\nHumane end points\nSeverity classifications\nTeam approach\nMinimising pain and distress\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\nAn understanding of current concepts of pain and distress and animal welfare\nAbility to recognise normal or desirable behaviour and appearance of animals\, and abnormal behaviour and signs of discomfort\, pain\, suffering\, or distress\nAbility to describe what a humane end point is and discuss their use\nAbility to describe the severity classifications\nKnowledge and understanding of the use of refinement to minimize welfare concerns\nKnowledge and understanding of effective welfare assessment strategies\n\n  \n*Further IAT fees may apply

SUMMARY:Practical Laboratory Skills
DESCRIPTION:Having the knowledge and confidence to work safely in the laboratory is an essential skill for all staff working in laboratories. This course will cover basic theoretical and practical laboratory skills including preparing COSHH risk assessments\, good laboratory practice\, use of fume hoods/biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other laboratory equipment\, pipetting skills\, using balances and preparing reagents and solutions.\n\nA sustainability module is also included to highlight ways to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory work. Participants will explore practical ways to improve sustainability in the laboratory by reducing energy consumption and minimising the use of plastics and water and promoting more sustainable supply chain practices.\n\nWho is this for?\n\n Research Staff\n Technical Staff and students new to the laboratory environment\n Experienced personnel looking to refresh their skills\n\nAfter the course you will be able to:\n\n Prepare and understand the purpose of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessment (RA) forms\n Understand the importance of good laboratory practice\, including choosing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining accurate laboratory records\n Correctly use fume hoods\, biosafety cabinets\, centrifuges and other general laboratory equipment\n Choose the correct pipette for your task and perform common techniques\n Set up and use balances correctly\n Prepare reagents and solutions\n Adjust the pH of solutions\n Incorporate sustainability considerations into laboratory work to support efficient and environmentally responsible research\n\n\n\n\nThis training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant\, high quality training. Upon completion of this course\, attendees can claim 21 CPD points.
