SUMMARY:Recognition of pain\, suffering and distress
DESCRIPTION:This unit prepares individuals to be able to identify normal condition and behaviour of experimental animals and enable them to differentiate between a normal animal and one which is showing signs of pain\, suffering or distress which could be a result of factors including environment\, husbandry or the effect of experimental protocols. It will also provide information regarding severity classifications\, cumulative severity and the use of humane endpoints. \nOnline only – 20th to 22nd May 2025. \nWe highly recommend completion of the level 4 unit Physiology of pain and distress in laboratory animals before attending this unit. \nCourse Details\nCourse length: 200 hours \nCredits: 20 \nTeacher: Paul Flecknell / Matt Leach \nYou will cover\n\nAssessment of the animal\nHumane end points\nRefinement\n\nKey Skills you will develop\n\nmethods for assessing and recording the welfare of the animals in your care\nKnowledge and understanding of humane end points and their use\nAbility to describe the use of anaesthesia or analgesia to reduce animal pain\, suffering\, distress or lasting harm
