Our regular workshops on prevention and alleviation of pain and distress have dealt primarily with post-surgical pain. Although we’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback, we have had frequent requests to include more information on other sources of pain and distress. Matt Leach, Jon Gledhill and I have been working to achieve this, and have redeveloped and updated our workshops for 2025. We will now present two, linked workshops on pain and distress and the first of these will run in May this year (21-22nd for the zoom sessions). We will retain the successful on-line format of a mix of e-learning, pre-recorded webinars and live, problem based sessions using zoom and mentimeter. This first workshop focusses on optimising the welfare of laboratory rodents and rabbits and will discuss both procedure-related and other sources of pain and distress. It will provide an overview of animal welfare and the nature of stress and distress, together with the practical application of this knowledge to optimise animal welfare.
