Genetics for Laboratory Animal Research

This unit will provide learners with the key genetic principles required to be able to support work with genetically altered animals in research with a focus on mouse models.
Hybrid learning – Face to face 8th September at Advance Training Centre, Online 10 am–12 pm on Tuesday 15th and Tuesday 22nd September 2026.

You will cover
- DNA and protein coding
- Gene structure and non-coding DNA
- Animal models in genetic research
Key Skills you will develop
- Ability to describe the structure of a gene in the context of DNA molecules, chromosomes and the cell structure
- Knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in protein synthesis and DNA replication
- Knowledge and understanding of the importance of cell division
- Ability to devise breeding programmes for maintaining and delivering inbred and outbred mouse strains
- Ability to explain the basic differences and similarities between the uses of genetically altered rodents, fish and poultry
