Genetics for Laboratory Animal Research

This unit will provide learners with the key genetic principles required to be able to support work with genetically altered animals in research with a focus on mouse models.

Hybrid learning – Face to face 8th September at Advance Training Centre, Online 10 am–12 pm on Tuesday 15th and Tuesday 22nd September 2026.

You will cover

  • DNA and protein coding
  • Gene structure and non-coding DNA
  • Animal models in genetic research

Key Skills you will develop

  • Ability to describe the structure of a gene in the context of DNA molecules, chromosomes and the cell structure
  • Knowledge and understanding of the processes involved in protein synthesis and DNA replication
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of cell division
  • Ability to devise breeding programmes for maintaining and delivering inbred and outbred mouse strains
  • Ability to explain the basic differences and similarities between the uses of genetically altered rodents, fish and poultry
